Join us for a special opportunity to hear from Te Papa’s National Services Head of Sector Victoria Esson and Head of Maturanga Maori Migoto Eria as they give us a moving firsthand account of Te Papa’s response to taonga recovery in the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle.
Get a more personal perspective and go beyond the news coverage to gain insight into how culture and heritage was affected by February's Cyclone Gabrielle. You will see striking photographs of what Te Papa experts experienced in recovery operations and hear about what is next for these communities. Te Papa’s National Services Te Paerangi offers outreach support to other museums, galleries and Māori hapori caring for collections across the country. When disaster strikes that support is needed more than ever. This talk will highlight some of the ways that Te Papa's team assisted the hardest hit communities on the east coast, with particular focus on Omahu Marae, Waiohiki Marae, Tangoio Marae, and Rangitira Marae in Te Karaka, Gisborne.
Victoria and Migoto will also share what resources will be useful for you to think about disaster preparedness and response in your own homes, so please feel welcome to bring your own questions for the team.
Migoto Eria, Ngāti Pāhauwera, Ngāti Huia, Ngāti Ruapani, Hokkaido Japan. Head of Mātauranga Māori. Migoto is an advocate for iwi Māori representation in the museum sector. Her interests include promoting kaitiakitanga of taonga, both in museums and private collections. As a curator of taonga Māori, she has published and written various articles about taonga Māori from an iwi Māori perspective.
Victoria Esson, Head of Sector, Pouwhakahaere National Services Te Paerangi. Victoria has worked in the museum sector for over 25 years. She has extensive experience and networks, particularly within museum education. Victoria’s work with National Services Te Paerangi focuses on, developing improvement tools for the museums and galleries and developing collaborative programmes that improve museological skills across the cultural sector.
