It’s that time of year when aurora are becoming clearer in our skies and fantastic photo opportunities await. If you’d like to learn where to find aurora and the best techniques for capturing them on camera, Tūhura Otago Museum Director and experienced astrophotographer, Dr Ian Griffin, will be bringing his advice to you on the Aurora: The Science and the Splendour Speaking Tour.
The tour will also explore the riskier side of space weather. Professor Craig Rodger of Otago University is leading research into how solar activity may damage Aotearoa’s electrical grid and communication systems – hear about the looming risk of a blackout and how we can prepare ourselves.
Ms Toni Hoeta (Ngāti Rangi, Te Atihaunui-ā-paparangi, Ngāti Porou, Te Atiawa), who helped develop Tūhura Otago Museum’s Solar Tsunamis science roadshow, will be sharing mātauranga Māori perspectives on space weather phenomena, telling the legends behind these celestial sights.
From 26 June to early July, Ian, Craig, and Toni will be presenting their talks around the South Island. Check below to see if they’re coming to your community and book yourself a ticket.
