Join Senior Curator, Global Contemporary Art, Natasha Conland for an after-hours conversation with Korean-New Zealand artist Suji Park on her recent commission Meonji Soojibga | Dust Collector. Young Members are invited to join this Contemporary Benefactors event, enjoy drinks on the East Terrace from 6pm, thanks to our mates at Almighty and Scapegrace. The talk starts at 6.30pm.

For Suji Park, the process of making often employs the abandoned materials and things she has collected from her surrounds. She describes the creative process as a non-verbal space, reminiscent of her experience learning a new language and culture after arriving in New Zealand as a pre-teen. Meonji Soojibga | Dust Collector comprises a series of heads that are imaginatively based on the traditional totem poles found in South Korea across the countryside. ‘While the origin of these structures is unknown, they are believed to bring protection,’ explains Park. Park’s installation reveals her truly creative handling of clay, drawing from linguistic, cultural, ceramic and sculptural traditions – its highly material display will be a sumptuous feast of hand-melded traditions.

This event is part of our membership programme. Join us for $80 per year (discounts available for students).
