WINE MASTERCLASS with Winemakers of Bannockburn

We are offering a Wine Masterclass involving our wonderful Bannockburn winemakers, with visits to Felton Road Winery, Quartz Reef, Tannacrieff Vineyard Stewart Town Vineyard and Black Quail Vineyard.

There will be tastings each day, and lots of learning about the unique wines of the Cromwell Basin, and how they fit in to the international world of wine.

The community of Central Otago winemakers is dedicated to working together to promote biodiversity and a sustainable industry.

Bannockburn has an impressive group of highly qualified award-winning winemakers with cultural diversity and international experience.

The programme we have developed for you is as follows:

Monday and Tuesday: Spend your days with Blair Walter, of Felton Road fame. Blair has been at Felton Road Winer since 1996, picking up international awards from its inaugural vintage. Previous winemaking experience included vineyards and wineries in New Zealand, (Giesen and Rippon), Australia (Saxonvale and Tarrawarra), California (Newton Vineyard), Oregon (Sokol Blosser) and Burgandy (Domaine de L”Arlot).

Wednesday: Tour of vineyard and tastings. You’ll have a fun day being introduced to the humour of Rudi Bauer, of Quartz Reef. He came to New Zealand from Austria in the mid-80s to work at Mission Bay in Hawkes Bay. One of the stalwarts of the Central Otago wine industry since its early days. Focus on biodiversity and Methode Traditionelle.

Thursday: Thursday your first tutor will be our remarkable “Port Queen”, Debra Cruickshank, of Tannacrieff Wines, home of Tannacrieff Hunter’s Collection Ruby Port. This whirlwind of a one-person band owns a boutique winery in the heart of Bannockburn, and produces wine, white and ruby port, carefully crafted by hand. Debra also provides a high-quality service to other boutique vineyards for small batch wine production.

The afternoon on Thursday will be in the hand of Jen Parr, winemaker for Valli Wines. An Oregon native and graduate of Stanford University, Jen adds a depth of international experience including USA, France, South Africa and Australia, but now calls Central Otago home. She began in this area in 2009, as head winemaker for Ollsen Wines (working with our committee member Heather McPherson). She has won many awards, including the first ‘Champion Winemaker Award’ at the New Zealand International Wine Show in 2012, and New Zealand Winemaker of the Year in 2020.

Friday: Friday your host, Kerry Herbert, of Stewart Town winery, will be your tour guide for a last opportunity to visit some of the other wine gems of the area. There may even be a blind test!

Tickets are available on the Bannockburn Arts website.
