Our final entry in our "Movies on Movies" series is the shocking, unnerving, and deliciously dark Sunset Boulevard, arguably the greatest movie ever made about Hollywood. The story follows an ageing silent film queen who refuses to accept her stardom has come to an end. She hires a young screenwriter to help stage her silver screen return, but a bizarre relationship unfolds between them, and when he tries to flea, the actress refuses to let him go.
Starring silent film superstar Gloria Swanson in a role built in her own shadow, the film also stars William holden, Eric Von Stroheim, and many more notable faces of the silent silver screen including Buster Keaton and Cecil B. DeMille. Directed and co-written by the magnificent Billy Wilder, this movie will leave a permanent imprint, and Swanson's performance as Norma Desmond will haunt you forever.
The film we be paired with a glorious restoration of "The 16mm Shrine," an episode of Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone starring Ida Lupino. It's a perfect companion to "Sunset Boulevard" both in style and theme, and it's likely the only way you'll ever see this wonderful piece of classic television from the early 1960s!
As always, all ticket sales go to restoration projects at The Regent Pahiatua.
