Before 2001: A Space Odyssey, there was nothing like it. Since 2001, there's still nothing like it. Stanley Kubrick's boundry-pushing vision, photographed gorgeously on 65mm film, is pure cinema - a staple of the form. The American Film Institute calls it "The Greatest Sci-Fi Film of All Time," they're right, and we'd add that it's not doubt the most influential as well.
Every SciFi film trope began here, but it's more than tropes and cliche - so much more. 2001 is beautiful, existential, challenging, meditative & mind-blowing. This is a film that's to be experienced, and there's no better place to do it that on a big screen - the way Kubrick intended. It'll be big. It'll be loud. It'll be as engrossing as ever.
After the program, there will be a sit down discussion with Jane Ross, director of the Wairarapa Film Festival. Cinematheque founder Derrick Sims and Ross will talk about Kubrick and his work and field questions from the audience.
