SUPPORT SCREENING FOR UKRAINE as part of the Lithuanian Film Festival in New Zealand
A man repairs his fishing net and goes out to the bridge. Two trams run into each other – nobody is hurt, and cables are fixed the same day. A small concert is given for factory workers, and the sincere performance of a violinist makes them cry. Bombs fall into the sea, but no one notices.
The city of Mariupol is by the Azov Sea in the Donbas region. Most of the city's residents, half a million according to the last census in 2015, were working for the steel factory and fishing for leisure or food in between shifts.
In 2015 Mantas visited Mariupol for the first time and fell in love with the city. He decided to make a film about ordinary people who live "five feet away" from the war zone. The result is a kaleidoscopic portrait of Mariupol and its multicultural community. It's also a subtle reminder that Russia's war against Ukraine started eight years ago.
In March 2022 Mantas Kvedaravičius went to Mariupol again. He probably had been documenting war atrocities and was taken prisoner by Russian soldiers. They killed him and threw his body out on the street.
"It's deeply painful to watch this film now, knowing that Mariupol is turned into rubble, tens of thousands of its residents were killed or forcibly deported to Russia. Once the peaceful city was turned into hell on earth, and the whole world (including me) is just watching". - audience review.
Mantas Kvederavičius' documentary film "Mariupolis" - received international recognition: in 2016, it entered the Berlin Film Festival and was nominated for the Amnesty International Award. His film "Mariupolis 2", edited after the director's death, recently received the Cannes festival jury's Special Award.
ALL PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED FOR UKRAINE in memory of director Mantas Kvedaravicius. Mantas is among the thousands of civilians killed by the Russian army since the start of the full-scale Putin invasion.
