Whittakers Musical Museum is delighted to present Strings Amore in partnership with Chamber Music New Zealand. The Baroque ensemble showcases the talent of Donald Maurice on viola d’amore, Martin Riseley and Rupa Maitra on violins, Sophia Acheson on viola, and Margaret Guldborg on cello. Enjoy their fascinating programme featuring the exquisite viola d’amore.

Well loved by some of the greatest composers of the Baroque era, the viola d’amore is a particularly beautiful instrument that has between six and seven strings, each of which is paired with a sympathetic string. The sympathetic strings add a resonant shimmer to the sound, most apparent when heard up close. Celebrated works by Telemann, Bach, and Vivaldi, and the masterful but unjustly under- performed Graupner will let the timeless grace of the viola d’amore shine through, wonderfully supplemented by its string counterparts.

Alongside its CMNZ series, Chamber Music New Zealand collaborates with music presenters across the country to present a curated selection of outstanding musicians of Aotearoa New Zealand and the world. Their engaging programmes celebrate the richness and variety of chamber music repertoire, including significant cornerstone works, new commissions, and repeat performances of enthralling New Zealand music. The Strings Amore tour is part of Chamber Music New Zealand's In Partnership series, presented in collaboration with music presenters across the country and highlighting some of Aotearoa's most outstanding artists.

Chamber Music New Zealand’s In Partnership Series is supported by the Deane Endowment Trust and the Stout Trust.
