VISION ZERO NOW - Direct action towards Auckland Transport to let them know that we do not want any more deaths on our roads. People on bikes deserve safety.

Everyone deserves to get home safely. However, when a person gets on a bike, whether it’s for recreationally purposes, to commute to work, or to get some shopping done, this is not always the case.

The reality on Auckland roads for people on bikes is grim. In just six years between 2014 and 2022, 18 people lost their lives while riding a bicycle. There are also near misses every day that are not reported, or people who sustain long-lasting injuries as a result of our unsafe roads. Very recently, there was yet another unfortunate but preventable death of a young person on a bike at Royal Oak.

Here in Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland Transport is involved in making “upgrades” to our streets, but often decide to prioritize convenience over safety. In the most recent case of the young man who was killed near the Royal Oak roundabout, Auckland Transport had once again ignored public calls for increased safety during consultations.

This is direct action to let Auckland Transport know that we want safe roads and safe streets.

As we are protesting for safety, anyone who cares about safety is encouraged to come! If you have a bike, bring it along for the bike rally. If not, come along and be part of the walking rally! The more people, the better!

What we will be doing:

At 11am on the 9th of April, we will meet at Silo Park. If you have a bike, bring it along for the bike rally. Those without bikes or unable to bring their bikes will also meet at Silo park and be part of the walking rally.

From here on, the walking rally will commence first and march towards Te Komititanga, to let the public know we want safety for people on bikes. The cyclists will follow, but will head towards the Auckland Transport office at Viaduct Harbor Avenue, where they will leave ghost bikes for Auckland Transport. Then the cyclists will also head towards Te Komititanga, where there will be a die in (a protest tactic) to represent the people killed on our roads.
