Dunedin, join us in celebrating our double-ended Fairlie locomotive this Labour Day.

Josephine turns 150 on Monday 24 October and is on track for some ‘trainmendous’ birthday fun!

150 years young, Josephine is a beloved feature of Toitū Otago Settlers Museum. The first stop for many visitors both young and old when visiting the Museum. Josephine and her sister engine Rose arrived in 1872 and were the first engines to work the Dunedin–Port Chalmers line.

All birthday festivities are free and include live music from The Foxy Tones, games, popcorn, candyfloss, balloons created by Pippity Pop and birthday themed crafts. And don’t forget to explore the galleries with our Josephine themed I-SPY gallery trail.
The Toitū café will be open for your coffee and snack purchases, and you’ll find a couple of local food trucks stationed just outside the main entrance.

Next to the Dunedin Railway Station you can also visit the steam locomotive Ja 1274. This will be open to the public from 8.30am - 10am and 11am - 5pm with thanks to Ocean Beach Railway

A must see for train enthusiasts – those both young and young at heart, all weekend long the Toitū Auditorium will be running 50 Years of Steam, a visual showcase dedicated to Dunedin’s rail history with imagery highlighting the opening of the Dunedin Railway Station along with some of the mighty locomotives that ran on Otago lines.

Happy Birthday Josephine!
