Have you always dreamed of writing a romance story but don’t know where to start? This weekend course will set you on your way to realizing that dream. The two days will follow a clear format and cover among other topics plotting, developing characters, setting the scene, identifying motivation and conflict and writing narrative and dialogue. The course will include numerous short writing exercises which you can use to begin developing your own stories.
Course outline:
- What is romance and how does it differ from other genres
- How to begin – what you need, computer set up, tips
- Use of language in first draft
- Identifying sub-genres
- Characterisation, narration, pacing, plotting, point of view, dialogue, voice, motivation, foreshadowing, protagonist, antagonist, backstory
- Conflict - internal and external – setting - emotion
- Scenes – three-act structure – conflict, climax, resolution
- Passive vs active writing
- Short writing exercises throughout will begin to develop each student’s own story
Who should attend this course? Primarily beginning romance writers. Anyone interested in learning to write romance, particularly the practicalities of putting a romance story together.
What to bring? Pen and paper (or laptop if you prefer to type). As this course spans the lunch break, bring a sandwich or similar and spend time meeting other writing students.
About the tutor: Multi-published contemporary romance writer Anne Ashby is keen to share her love of the romance genre and the written word in general. Encouraging others to write is her goal.
For the Writer's Weekend session, you are invited to attend our opening address at 9am on Saturday 27 August. Carole Beu from the Women's Bookshop will fire up the day with an early morning talk on her raves and faves. Have a cuppa, listen to Carole and meet others.
