Join us on the day that Te Tiriti o Waitangi was signed in Pōneke in 1840, and learn more about the Raukawa Moana/Cook Strait sheet of the Treaty from a tangata whenua perspective.

Hear Te Āti Awa kaumatua Kura Moeahu shed new light on the signing of the Raukawa Moana/Cook Strait sheet of Te Tiriti o Waitangi on 29 April 1840.

What really happened when Henry Williams arrived in Pōneke on a sailing ship with a copy of Te Tiriti o Waitangi? Why did some of Kura Moeahu’s tūpuna (ancestors) sign, and what impacts have these tohu (signs) had on Te Āti Awa iwi ever since?

Kura Moeahu will take us on a journey through history, share his mātauranga of Te-Whanganui-a-Tara with us, and explore contemporary challenges for mana whenua.

About the speaker
Kura Moeahu (Te Āti Awa) has been actively involved in iwi governance through his previous roles as Chair of Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa, the Waiwhetu Marae Trust, the Harbour Island Kaitiaki Board, and Waiwhetu Pa Reserve Trust. As a member of the Weltec Māori Advisory Board, he was instrumental in establishing Te Auaha NZ Institute of Creativity, and he is widely recognised for his knowledge of te ao Māori, tikanga Māori and Māori arts. He is currently Parliament’s Tumu Whakarae.
