Experience the magic of male voices
The New Zealand Male Choir is performing at St Paul’s Cathedral, Dunedin with the Royal Dunedin Male Choir on Tuesday 28th September 2021, 7.00pm.

The joy of singing in a choral setting is what brings the New Zealand Male Choir and the Royal Dunedin Male Choir for an evening of music. The choirs will perform separately and together so you get to hear the widest variety of sound. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear full male choral singing at its best and a concert New Zealand Male Choir members have long been waiting for.

The New Zealand Male Choir is an auditioned choir with over 60 members from Southland to North Auckland, of which 34 will be on tour. Conducted by Hawkes Bay’s Joe Christensen, the Choir sing a range of music including classical, folk, waiata, gospel, operatic, popular, jazz, and contemporary.

The Choir have entertained audiences both nationally and internationally for the past 22 years including several tours throughout Europe, Australia, and Canada. The Choir practises with North Island and South Island groups meeting monthly and collectively meet for tours or concerts three or four times a year. This will be the fifth concert in an eighteen-day concert tour around the central and lower South Island.

The Royal Dunedin Male Choir’s origins can be traced to the entertainment provided in 1878 at functions marking the opening of the railway link to Dunedin. From this evolved a Liedertafel Society which was incorporated in 1886. In 1917 the name was changed to the Dunedin Male Choir with the word “Royal” being added by Royal Patent in 1927 acknowledging three performances before Royalty in 1901, 1920 and 1927. The Choir celebrated its 125th Anniversary in 2011. The current membership is a little over forty at the beginning of 2021.
The Choir has performed Charity concerts throughout Otago, Southland, and South Canterbury, and has taken part in Male Choir Festivals, and performances for Lions and Rotary Conventions. The Choir’s contribution to the 150th anniversary celebrations of Otago and Southland was the organisation and participation in a very successful concert in the Dunedin Town Hall to celebrate the International Scottish gathering. It has also featured in the religious programme “Praise Be” on TVNZ.

This is the first time both choirs have performed together and are looking forward to entertaining Dunedin and give the promise of an enjoyable and memorable evening of music and song.

Tickets are available on the Eventfinda website or at the door. Adults $20. Secondary and Primary school students free. Eft-Pos available.
