Matariki Ōtari Rongoā korero with Sharli Solomon and Hinemoa Metekingi – Learn about some traditional Maori healing and herbal plants at Ōtari.
Come along to celebrate the return of Puanga and Matariki, the stars that mark the Māori new year. Listen and observe the stories of the forest and learn the restoring properties of the plants at this auspicious time. Bring warm clothes, sturdy footwear and a torch.
Sharli Solomon and Hinemoa Metekingi (Ngati Toa Rangatira) are animated when they speak of life growing up in their playground from Kaitoki to Reikorangi. Sharli and Hinemoa are local mana whenua Rongoā practitioners with strong connections to Ōtari. Their lifelong passion is for the environment, which is evident in the range of activities, events and committees they have been part of. In 2015, Sharli was acknowledged by Porirua City Council for her commitment to revitalising the harbour and natural environment.
