The Otago Southland Employers’ Association runs an annual Health & Safety Forum in Dunedin and Invercargill for its members as well as non-members.
This year the Forum will explore the benefits of taking a proactive approach that extends beyond ensuring physical safety to considering overall wellbeing.
Hence our focus for 2021 is ‘Hauora - Health & Wellbeing’.

We have brought together some very talented and inspirational speakers from across the country who represent the latest in health and safety thinking, including learnings from Covid-19, drawing from real experience in challenging environments.

Journalist and television presenter, Matt Chisholm, will be the MC for the event. Matt has spoken openly about challenges with his mental health and recently produced a two-part documentary called ‘Man Enough’.

Matt will be joined by:

- Michael Wood, the Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety

- Lance Burdett, former Police Negotiator & Consultant of Warn International who will cover topics such as; why it is that many people are feeling overwhelmed and sometimes become emotional, how to manage the uncertainty and adversity following the arrival of Covid, how to significantly reduce worry, and the importance of always taking positive action.

- Dr Liesje Donkin from Clinical Advisory Services Aotearoa. Liesje’s work and personal interests are in helping people find better ways of doing things and how to improve their wellbeing.

- Andrew Jefferies from New Zealand Oil & Gas will be looking at what we have learnt in this industry, how we have learnt, the tools developed and how these have contributed to oil and gas’s evolution as one of the safest industries in the world.

- Dr Tom Mulholland, who draws from his experience as an ED Doctor, entrepreneur, CEO and stand-up comedian, will be presenting on measuring risk. Dr Tom believes that Health IS safety and with around 80% of workplace accidents being due to fatigue, emotions or medical events, it is vital to measure, monitor and manage, physical, psychological and social health.

- Phil Hudson from Workplace First Aid Training, who has a practical presentation on how prepared we really are for an emergency

Find out how addressing the intangible aspects of wellbeing will improve not just your people’s health and safety practices, but also their resilience and performance at work at our Health & Safety Forum 2021.
