On Halloween, we celebrate director James Whale in a "Frankenstein" / "The Invisible Man" double feature, presented by the Tararua Cinematheque.

After honing his skills as a director and set designer in a WWI POW camp, Whale would grab the attention of Universal Pictures founder Carl Laemmle who offered Whale the role of director on 1931's "Frankenstein." The film was a smash hit and launched the careers of both Whale and Boris Karloff, who played The Monster.

In 1933, Whale helmed "The Invisible Man," an under-seen and under-appreciated entry in the Universal Monsters archive. The film made great use of cutting edge, mind-blowing visual effects that still feel fresh and new today. "The Invisible Man" starred Claude Rains, an unknown at the time, in the title role. Rains would soon feature in many more great pictures including "The Wolf Man," "Casablanca," Hitchcock's "Notorious," and "Lawrence of Arabia."

Both movies have been recently restored by Universal Pictures, and our prints are these glorious editions. They're gorgeous to behold on the big screen.

As usual, our night begins with period adverts from the Tararua District, an introduction to the film(s), and a specially created animated overture and intermission are also in store.
