DSO’s ‘Beethoven’s Emperor’ concert on 26 November (which replaces the cancelled ‘Russian Rhapsody’ concert) features celebrated NZ conductor Kenneth Young, plus eminent NZ pianist Diedre Irons who will be performing Beethoven’s powerful ‘Emperor’ concerto. Leonie Holmes’s evocative ‘Elegy’ opens the concert. The programme includes Shostakovich’s remarkable Symphony No. 9 which displays genuine lyricism, profound and powerful sorrow, as well as Shostakovich’s unique irreverent and sardonic sense of humour.
Covid-19 requirements include mask-wearing by patrons (except when seated in the auditorium), a limited seating capacity and General Admission tickets only. Programmes will be on sale on the night, but it will not be possible to sell refreshments, nor will it be possible to present the pre-concert talk.
