Dr Monica Tempian: Talk on German-Israeli Dialogue in Poetry

Lessons learnt from history motivated survivor-writer Manfred Winkler (1922, Putila, Bucovina – 2014, Jerusalem, Israel) to embrace the role of the Jew as a mediator between cultures.
Eight volumes of poetry in German, four volumes in Hebrew, as well as poetry translations in seven languages, account for his tireless promotion of a pluricultural ethos. In the midst of our current preoccupation with conflict, memory and memorialization, it seems fitting to engage with an award-winning Israeli writer whose dialogical poetry evokes the memory of the Shoah with a sense of grief rather than from a position of judgement.

Monica Tempian and her research team will share some findings from their current work on the 100th Anniversary Edition of Manfred Winkler’s Works,
a large-scale international project co-funded by the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and Victoria University of Wellington.

Monica Tempian (DrPhil Geneva) is Senior Lecturer in German at Victoria University of Wellington. She has published several books, including Manfred Winkler. Haschen nach Wind (2017) and The Young Victims of the Nazi Regime: Migration, the Holocaust, and Postwar Displacement (with Simone Gigliotti, 2016). She is currently preparing the 100th Anniversary Edition of Manfred Winkler’s Works in collaboration with Research Assistants Rick Sahar and Courtney McDonald (Victoria University of Wellington), Professor Hans-Jürgen Schrader (Geneva University), and Dr Jan Kühne (Hebrew University of Jerusalem).
