Día de Muertos/Day of the Dead is a time of celebration in Mexican culture. It is a time to build ofrendas/altars that remember and celebrate the lives of the family members and friends we have lost.

As part of the Wellington Día de Muertos Festival, to be held on 1 November, we are inviting all Wellingtonians to participate in a free workshop to learn about:

What is Día de Muertos?

What do all the different objects on an ofrenda mean?

Building different types of outdoor offrendas

What everyday materials you can use to make an ofrenda?

There will be two more free workshops as part of the Festival:

Paper mache for Día de Muertos on 2 October

Papel Picado/paper cuts on 3 October

Space is limited, so registration is required. To register for any of the workshops, go to: https://forms.gle/2s11Uw7qHPXf3twp6

About Wellington Día de Muertos Festival:

Día de Muertos is a holiday that reunites the living and dead. It is a holiday for celebrating life and death, a holiday where mourning is exchanged for celebration.

Opening at midday and continuing until 10pm on the 1st of November 2021 at Glover Park, Te Aro.

You can learn how to make paper flowers or enter a face painting contest. Come and appreciate the offrendas (altars) or contribute to the community altar to honour those who have passed on. Starting at 4pm, there will also be Mexican folklorico performances from Ollin Yoliztli-Life and Movement and Mariachi music brought to us by Carlos Navae.
