Streets for People - Street Party

Come join us at our upcoming Street Party to mark the re-opening of The Square!

Over the past seven months, we've not only been transforming the popular shopping stretch to be more pedestrian-friendly, but we've spent the majority of the five-month construction period future-proofing key underground services. Now that the first stage of our Streets for People Square Upgrades are officially finished, it's time to throw a party.

We'll be hosting a street party for you to check out the new space and to join in with the businesses in celebrating the end of the construction period. We also have a time capsule we're putting in the road that you can contribute to. Anyone who makes a purchase from the shops during the street party will be able to add something to our time capsule and be entered in a draw for a weekend away for two people to New Plymouth.

At 10am, the event will start with the Mayor and iwi officially opening the street.

The street will be broken into pop-up zones.

Pop Up Zone 1 – Outdoor library/craft space, with the Mobile Library Bus, bean bags, pillows for people to chill out. We will also have tables and newsprint for people to get crafty, with crayons, pencils, paint, rocks, #palmyproud colouring in etc.

Pop Up Zone 2 – Games area, with the Library’s Imagination Playground and giant board games for kids and adults to play as they please. We will have a #palmyproud fame frame, face painting and Groovylious costumes for people to dress up and take photos

Pop Up Zone 3 – we will have our local DJ DFresh, fire and circus acts and a chance to win some spot prizes by showing us your best dance moves. We will also be filling our time capsule - anyone who makes a purchase from one of the shops on the opening day can put something in the capsule.

Pop Up Zone 4 – Outside Bivouac will be a campfire setting with astro-turf, and log seating around a brazier. Bivouac will take their store outdoors to create a camp ground vibe.

Pop Up Zone 5 – Palmy Unleashed and Mustard Folk will have a mixture of furniture to provide Coffee Club and the Sushi Shop some extra outdoor seating.
