The history of Jin Shin Jyutsu (JSJ) dates back to around 712AD. According to ancient written records, which remain in the Archives of the Imperial Palace in Japan, Jin Shin Jyutsu (pronounced Jootsoo) was widely known before the birth of Gautama (Buddha, India), before the birth of Moses (recorded in the Bible), and before the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Things – Japan A.D. 712).

Jin Shin Jyutsu (JSJ) is an innate part of man’s wisdom – simplifying the complexities of existence – and is truly and Art of Living.

The art was rediscovered in the early 1900’s, studied and eventually taught by a Japanese sage, Jiro Murai. Master Murai selected only a few students, one of which was a young Japanese American woman named Mary Burmeister.

Mary studied with Jiro Murai for about seven years, before returning from Japan to the USA, where she continued to correspond with him for many years. During this time she began sharing Jin Shin Jyutsu with a small group of people, eventually giving classes to the public, oftentimes made up of medical professionals, therapists as well as the curious public, and those who would one day step in as instructors themselves. It is through her devotion and commitment to Jin Shin Jyutsu, that so many across the world have benefited from the knowledge of this healing art.

Through deep study and evolving awareness, Mary developed JSJ even further than her teacher, Master Murai, and created a set of textbooks; only available to those who attend the 5-day seminars.

As Jin Shin Jyutsu became more widely recognised and sought after, more instructors were trained and the headquarters established in Scottsdale Arizona. Mary’s sons David (President) and Michael Burmeister manage the organisation, lead the faculty of teachers, oversee regional offices around the world, and facilitate classes, workshops, meetings and special events.

A Jin Shin Jyutsu community has been active in New Zealand for over 20 years and in 2017 the JSJ NZ Charitable Trust was established. The aim of the Trust is to further raise awareness of Jin Shin Jyutsu, support and encourage more New Zealanders to seek greater knowledge and understanding of health and wellbeing issues, helping them make informed choices that benefit themselves, and others. In addition, a dedicated JSJ NZ Office was set up to support those in New Zealand, and the wider regions of Australasia and beyond.

International seminars and workshops are very much a part of our education and offer support for the study pathway. In 2020, we welcome Maria Miniello from Perth, Western Australia. Maria has over 20 years of experience in applying the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu.

Her first introduction to Jin Shin Jyutsu was in 1998, when a friend gifted her the book “The Touch of Healing” written by Alice Burmeister.

The draw to the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu was immediate.

She has a background in clothing design - working with the body and its form. Jin Shin Jyutsu has progressed that focus, to work through the layers of the physical body all the way to its core and then beyond, to the original “blueprint”.

Many years and many classes later, this journey of discovery continues. Maria has worked through Australia and Malaysia to further the community of students, organising classes and study groups.

Maria is a contributing author of the book:
- Weaving Complementary Knowledge Systems and Mindfulness to Educate a Literate Citizenry for Sustainable and Healthy Lives
- Malgorzata Powietrzynska (SUNY Brooklyn EOC, USA) and Kenneth Tobin (The Graduate Center of CUNY, USA) (Eds.)

Her Chapter titled: Jin Shin Jyutsu and Our Hands, Instrumental for a new way forward, covers the history and development of the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu, 4 case studies and the start of a potential dialogue for the integration of the practice of Jin Shin Jyutsu into all aspects of Modern Medicine.
