Ngā wai e rua│Stories of Us is a special compilation programme that looks at encounters between Māori and non-Māori dating back to 1901.
This fascinating 45-minute programme features some remarkable, rarely seen footage from the vaults of Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision. From the first filmed encounter between Māori and British Royals to footage of the 1975 Land March, these items evoke a strong sense of the shared stories and rich dual histories of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Ngā wai e rua│Stories of Us was developed as a partnership between Ngā Taonga and the Ministry of Education. The name references ‘the two waters” – braided rivers that converge but still find ways to flow along their own path.
Diane McAllen, Senior Outreach Curator has worked at Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision for over 20 years. She was one of the team who curated Ngā Wai E Rua, she will introduce the film and hold a Q&A session afterwards.

Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision is Aotearoa New Zealand’s Archive of Film, Television and Sound. We collect, preserve, care for and share the audiovisual taonga of Aotearoa so that our nation’s stories are never lost. With nearly 800,000 titles dating back to 1895, our collection includes film, television, sound and radio recordings, as well as documents, posters and artefacts. We digitally preserve audiovisual taonga to ensure it will always be available for future generations.
