Cormac Begley is arguably Ireland’s best and most recognised concertina player. He came to New Zealand to showcase his spellbinding show Mám at the New Zealand Festival, where there were four sold out shows at the TSB Arena in Wellington. Following this he has been encouraged and accepted to perform a one-off solo concert at the Wellington Bluegrass Society.

Cormac Begley is a bass, baritone, treble and piccolo concertina player from a West-Kerry musical family. He plays in a number of projects including: duets with Rushad Eggleston (cellist), Clíodhna Ní Bheaglaoich (fiddle, viola and Sean-nós dancer), Liam O'Connor (fiddle), Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh (The Gloaming) and Liam Ó Maonlaí (Hothouse Flowers), a trio entitled ‘Concertina’ (with Noel Hill and Jack Talty) and with the band Ré. He is the founder of Airt and the award winning live concert series Tunes in the Church in Galway and Dublin. Cormac was nominated for Instrumentalist of the Year at the inaugral RTÉ Folk Awards 2018 and his debut album was nominated for Irish Times Album of the Year.

Cormac has toured extensively and has performed at many of the world’s leading auditoriums. His debut solo album received nine five star reviews, including:
"Nothing short of spectacular." - BBC Radio Northern Ireland

“A Spellbinding gathering of music and memories.” - The Guardian

For this concert, Cormac will introduce eight different types of rare vintage concertinas and talk about the instrument, both the mechanics and history. Woven through the set will be a series of incredible tunes, making this a rare opportunity to hear up close one of the world’s finest instrumentalists.

Special thanks to Culture Ireland and the New Zealand Festival for making Cormac's visit possible.
