Brother Heinrich’s Christmas is The Linden Singers end-of-year concert presented in St. Matthew’s Church. Once again the choir will be directed by founding conductor, Basil Brooker.
John Rutter is one of the choir’s favourite composers and amongst his prolific output, are three delightful “musical fables” for children – and eavesdropping adults. One of these, Brother Heinrich’s Christmas, is the centrepiece for this concert.
It is a delightful story about Brother Heinrich who lived in a monastery where his job was to look after the winepress which juiced the grapes sourced from the monastery vineyards and was worked by his companion, Sigismund the donkey. Brother Heinrich also ran the monastery choir and sometimes the donkey was allowed to attend choir practice even though he could only sing two notes! But then it was announced the Archbishop was coming to Christmas dinner and the donkey was told he could no longer sing in the choir. That is when problems started for Brother Heinrich but all ended happily. It could even be the audience might discover the apparent origins of that wonderful Christmas carol In dulci Jubilo.
The first half of the concert features Choral Masterpieces, both old and new and features works by Philips, Purcell, Mozart, Telemann, Haydn and Rutter with accompaniment for most them provided by the Cathedral Strings. Well-known Hawkes Bay soprano Caroline Hickman presents a bracket of songs in the second half by Australian composer F S Kelly making a nice contrast with the choral sound of the choir. Rounding out the afternoon is a couple of advent carols ahead of the coming festive season.
Tickets are available at the door and the concert is followed by a complimentary afternoon tea.
