Every so often a musical act appears that seems to exist on a continuum rather than any particular moment of time.

American West is a roots group following the well-worn path taken by Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal, and the Grateful Dead before them. This is the soundtrack to rough and rowdy lives lived long ago in El Paso, New Orleans, Memphis, and out on the Oklahoma plains—with occasional diversions to Appalachia—as the spirit of these outlaws, boozers and brawlers come tumbling into the 21st century.

American West is fronted by reluctant leader JW Louis. A road-warrior, the singer and guitarist have amassed 200k km on his odometer playing folk, bluegrass, blues, and country music all over the United States and sleeping on couches of strangers and in cheap motels along the way.

With American West, JW's guitar and voice are complemented by top musicians including sought-after session bassist Frans Huber, and chicken-pickin' country guitarist Tab Tuburan.

Aside from the American songbook, American West plays selections from the hundreds of songs JW has composed over the years. From playing crawfish boils to Baton Rogue to roots festivals in New Zealand, American West brings music that folks can sing or dance to and feel in their souls.
