A musicologist as well as painter, Gillian Lander’s works often have an underlying contemplative or religious reference, as is particularly the case with her six responsories to ‘The Dark Night of the Soul’, an eight-stanza poem by Carmelite Spanish monk, St John of the Cross [1542 – 1591].
She accompanies these with four oils on plywood that address global warming with references to friend Alys Thorpe’s poem ‘Blake’s Law’, and a couple of additional abstract compositions.
