A collection of works produced by Ross Gillies over the last twenty years, complemented by works produced by family and friends.
“This show arises out of a most challenging moment in my life: Cancer diagnosis (early December 2018). It was a moment when I was forced to take stock, assess what was important, what I had achieved and learnings that had been gained.
Initially I came up with very sorrowful, introverted themes for this show but as I processed things, optimism and appreciation kept breaking through. As a consequence, I have decided to display works that I have produced over the last twenty plus years, punctuating them with sketchbook drawings, working studies and photographs of works not in the show but that are an important part of the body of work.
Looking back, I’d say that the earliest works appear to be very tentative but I wouldn’t have produced any if it wasn’t for the encouragement and inspiration received from Dunedin artist friend Lindsay Crooks, who sadly passed away in 2005. I also need to acknowledge the friends who have been persuaded, encouraged, and at times, cajoled into exhibiting with me over this time. Many of them have put a work in this show.
I feel so honoured and privileged to have the support of family and friends to celebrate this moment with me.”
