Auckland’s classical music lovers are in for a treat as the Remuera based Chamber orchestra Wairua Sinfonietta presents an exciting concerto gala for their third concert of the year, on Saturday the 31st of August, at The Community of St. Luke, Remuera.

The orchestra shares the stage with some of Auckland and Hamilton’s finest up and coming musicians, showcasing concerti for soloists on flute, horn, violin, bassoon, and cello. A typical classical concert usually programs one concerto, but Wairua’s concerto gala provides the opportunity for audiences to hear five concerti in one sitting, pieces rarely heard otherwise in New Zealand.

Repertoire includes:
Reinecke - Flute Concerto Op.283 (2nd movt.)
Mozart - Horn Concerto in E flat major No.4 K.495
Haydn - Violin Concerto in G major Hob. vlla.4 (1st movt.)
Mozart - Bassoon Concerto in B flat major K.191 (1st movt.)
Popper - Hungarian Rhapsody Op.68

For an instrumental soloist, there is nothing like the adrenaline of performing a concerto with the backing of an orchestra. Lush strings and winds provide a cushion of sound for a lyrical soloist, and the dramatic energy of the combined orchestra makes for some exciting climaxes to enhance the soloist’s virtuosity.

Leading the orchestra will be the orchestra’s founder and music director Elizabeth Lau, a dynamic and versatile musician who has conducted all over New Zealand, Australia and throughout Europe including the UK, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. She divides her time in Auckland between professional engagements from teaching, double bass playing, piano accompaniment, and conducting for ensembles including the University of Auckland Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Choral, Bach Musica, St Luke’s Community Choir among others.

Elizabeth’s goal for the orchestra is to “through Wairua Sinfonietta, bring musicians and audiences together to support wider community through the gift of music performance at the highest possible level, making positive influence on the society, enabling connection and realising the vision - unity through music.”

For this program, the orchestra gives back to the community by donating its proceeds to the Tironui Music Trust, a charitable organizations which provides music education to children in high deprivation neighbourhoods.
