I am thrilled to be collaborating with Mike Brown and Riki Osborne to facilitate our first ever bone carving workshop at Peihana Farm. Mike and Riki are at the forefront of the bone carving movement in Taranaki and specialise in getting beginners motivated and inspired.
Mike Brown lives at Tongapotutu in North Taranaki and has been carving bone off and on since the early 1980s. In recent years, with retirement, Mike has had more time to dedicate to his art and organising bone carving events. He's also passionate about teaching beginner carvers.
Mike launched Mokau Bone Carving to bring carvers together and to showcase the stunning work being done by carvers in Aotearoa/NZ. Mike runs a national bone carving workshop each Easter in Mokau and a monthly bone carving club meets at his studio in Tongaporutu.
Riki Osborne is originally from Wanganui and has been living in Taranaki for the last five years. While a carpenter by trade, he has always had a passion for art. He completed the Foundation Visual Arts course at Whanganui Polytechnic, and this is where he discovered his love for carving. Riki enjoys carving all materials like pakohe (rock formed by consolidated clay), bone and shell – but pounamu (greenstone) is his favourite. Like Mike, Riki enjoys teaching learners the art of carving.
If you are craving creative and hankering to make something special out of bone then this is the workshop for you. Beginners through to advanced carvers are welcome to attend.
