Since 2002, the biennial Walters Prize has been New Zealand’s preeminent – and toughest – contemporary art award. The Prize sees four shortlisted artists recreate or extend the outstanding work for which they were nominated.

The exhibition opens Saturday 12 July and the winner will be announced at a gala dinner in September by international judge, Charles Esche.

Finalists for The Walters Prize 2014:

Simon Denny for 'All You Need Is Data – The DLD 2012 Conference REDUX'
Created from presentations at the prestigious DLD technology conference in 2012, 'All You Need Is Data – The DLD 2012 Conference REDUX' continues second-time nominee Simon Denny’s investigation into the unending flow of data in contemporary life.

Maddie Leach for 'If you find the good oil let us know'
Maddie Leach began this open-ended project in 2012. For the most recent extension, visitors will find elements of the project in different parts of the Gallery – the foyer, the shop – and also on the internet.

Luke Willis Thompson for 'inthisholeonthisislandwhereiam'
Re-enacted for the three-month duration of this year’s Walters Prize, 'inthisholeonthisislandwhereiam' takes visitors outside the gallery, into unknown territory, breaking down the divide between public and private.

Kalisolaite ’Uhila for 'Mo’ui tukuhausia'
The title of this consciousness-raising performance translates as ‘life put aside’. Kalisolaite ’Uhila reinterprets his 2012 performance, during which he lived as a homeless person, for the new, challenging site around the Gallery.

Saturday 12 July – Sunday 12 October
Level 2 – free entry
