Colt by New Zealand choreographer Sarah Foster-Sproull – exploring ideas of a community in the throes of creation. What it means to be a part of something big or something small. Colt could be a gun. It could be a horse. It could be a toy gun pointed at a horse, held by a dancer in a blindfold. Unsettling works in an Unsettled world – be challenged – exhilarated – be afraid – watch from the safety of your seat.
Colt was developed and toured in 2013 as Footnote's 7th and final touchstone 'Made in New Zealand' season, before the transition to Footnote New Zealand Dance in 2014.
Choreography by Sarah Foster-Sproull in collaboration with the Footnote dancers, with music by Eden Mulholland, dramaturgy by Andrew Foster, and Lighting Design by Jennifer Lal. Colt performed to rave reviews in Wellington, Auckland (with an emotional standing ovation), Hamilton and New Plymouth.
"...a beautiful, unsettling and poignant piece of contemporary dance/theatre/music." - Holly Shanahan, Theatreview
"...a rousing standing ovation from a capacity audience, a richly deserved acknowledgement of the artistry, passion, skill and commitment of the company's dancers and the demanding choreography which brought these qualities to the fore." - Raewyn Whyte, Theatreview
"For all its manifested beauty - creamy silk-clad bodies creating intensely sculptural shapes between lifts and balances in endless variation - the work has a dark message, a pungent flavour of anger, determined rebellion, repression, spasticity, loss of identity and evil." - Bernadette Rae, NZ Herald
