Southerners know her name and her music but (with the exceptions of Gore, Blenheim and Golden Bay), have had few opportunities to see her on stage. And no wonder, she’s spent most of the last two decades growing her fan base in places like Hamburg, London, Melbourne and most recently the South West US states of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and California. Donna Dean heads south for her ‘Cover Up One Eye’ tour in August.
Fans of the new TV drama ‘Nashville’ will recognise the name the Bluebird Café. Sounds Australia invited Donna to perform at the Bluebird September 2013 alongside Paul Kelly as part of their showcase events at the annual Americana Music Week conference and awards.
NZ music critic Graham Reid describes Dean as one who writes “with the poetic economy of musicians like James McMurtry and Dolly Parton…in that she can sketch a story in a few words”. Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange magazine (USA) says her songs have “real lyrics, real themes, real people…which just blows you away”.
Dean won her first two Tui awards in 2004 for her album ‘Money’ and the song ‘Work It Out’ featuring Americana band The Amazing Rhythm Aces. She won double again with 2010 album ‘What Am I Gonna Do?, winning Best Country Album and Best Country Song awards 2011. Her ‘Tyre Tracks & Broken Hearts’ album was nominated for a Tui award in 2013.The song ‘What Am I Gonna Do?’ is on the playlist of Sony music’s soon to be released ‘Godzone Country ‘album.
To quote Greg Johnson, host of the famous Blue Door music venue in Oklahoma City, “she’s world class”. Don’t ‘Cover Up One Eye’, ...both eyes open now for a chance to see Ms Dean live in your town.
