It is that time of year again, with the district eagerly awaiting the Ashburton Society of Arts Annual Exhibition. 2014 marks the Society's 50th anniversary exhibition. It will be held in April this year and will be the last exhibition held in the current Art Gallery. Ashburton Society of Arts formed in 1964, with the philosophy to encourage the study, practice and creativity of the visual arts. This credo has been maintained till the present day. With hard work and enthusiasm by early members and two small grants the Society was able to take over the Glasgow Lease on the property on 53 Short Street in the 1980’s, which is now known as the Short St. Studio.
In the 1990’s enough money had been saved to purchase the land.
In 2009 a further extension had been built debt free which has opened the Studio to much greater use.
The annual exhibition features art works from local, national and guest artists with categories including: painting, applied art, craft and photography all of which are available for purchase. The guest artists this year will include Min Kim, Svetlana Orinko, Tina Yeatman and Henry Lowen-Smith.
Tickets for the Ashburton Society of Arts opening function being held on Monday 7 April will be available from the Gallery reception.
Opening Monday 7 April 7:00pm
