Following the successful first ever urban release of a threatened species at Rotorua Museum over the summer (2013/2014), visitors can still catch glimpses of the three kārearea (New Zealand falcons) in the Government Gardens.

Rotorua Museum and Wingspan, the National Bird of Prey Centre, joined forces on this special project which has proved to be very popular with visitors from all over New Zealand and the world.

On 2 January 2014 the three chicks were released from a ‘hack’ box located high on the Museum roof. Visitors watched them transform from shaky youngsters to speedy teenagers as they learn to fly and hunt for their own food.

After a naming contest on Trade Me and through the Rotorua Museum facebook page, the kārearea have been named Hatupatu, Tama and Te Rangi Rere I Waho (Maureen), all names that have a very strong link to Rotorua and Te Arawa.

The falcons are all still entertaining visitors around the Museum and Government Gardens area, but are taking trips further afield as their confidence grows. Rotorua Museum also has a special display, called On the Wing, about kārearea, the urban release project, and the work Wingspan does.

Entry is included with Museum admission. Adults $20, seniors $18 and children $8. Entry for Rotorua residents is free with appropriate ID.
