Odyssey

The ‘Odyssey’ is coming to the Quarry. Following the critical acclaim and beaming audiences from last summer's show 'Quarry', Northland Youth Theatre is in the midst of creating its next big summer event, a colourful re-imagining of Homer’s epic ‘The Odyssey’.

Directed by locally grown theatre-maker, Laurel Devenie, who wowed local and national audiences in Auckland Theatre Company’s production of ‘On the Upside Down of the World’ in 2012, and whose work on ‘Quarry’ was received as a “highly recommended... wild burst of fun”. She returns to her native Northland to work her magic once again, with a huge cast of teenagers and a sprinkling of junior actors, it promises to be a fun filled evening for all ages.

The play is to be set amongst the mysterious cliffs and Elysian waterfalls of the Whangarei Quarry Arts Centre. “It’s going to be a unique, immersive experience where the audience is led on a journey around the quarry; through caves and sea storms, palaces and feasts as the story unfolds” Devenie enthuses.

So expect NYT’s trademark menagerie of youth, joy, surprise and carnival to provide a unique evening of excitement and intrigue.It’s a story about getting stuck, trying to get home, looking for your parents and meeting your destiny. Its packed with seductive sirens, many faced beasts, one eyed monsters, capricious gods, shipwrecks, prophecies, battles, muses, feasting, bicycles and BBQs. It’s going to be an Odyssey.
