headland Sculpture On the Gulf is New Zealand’s leading contemporary outdoor sculpture exhibition set on a magnificent coastal walkway on Waiheke Island.

The very successful inaugural event attracted 12,000 visitors growing to over 32,000 in 2011.

Thirty new large-scale sculptures will be exhibited along the spectacular 2.5km coastal walkway on Waiheke Island. From both established and emerging artists, these works will be chosen from a panel of selectors chaired by John Gow (co-founder of Sculpture on the Gulf and Connells Bay Sculpture Park), Sue Gardiner of the Chartwell Trust and Lara Strongman, an independent curator from Christchurch. The judge for the awards, who will work independently of the selectors, is Rhana Davenport, Director of the Govett Brewster Gallery in New Plymouth.

A large Pavilion complex will be set behind the Matiatia foreshore with beautiful views across the bay. The Pavilion will provide a welcome to our visitors and an opportunity for us to share a unique Waiheke experience with you.

Enjoy a delicious selection of light breakfasts, morning and afternoon teas and platter lunches and in the late afternoon and early evening tapas and light meals will be served.

There will be a dedicated Art Gallery space within the Pavilion for the duration of the Exhibition which will feature a companion exhibition of works by invited artists, as well as maquettes of the works exhibited along the walk, and other works from these sculptors. You will also have the opportunity to attend Artists’ Talks where you can hear our selected Exhibition artists talk about their work and practice.

At the end of your walk relax, socialise with friends and listen to entertainment from Waiheke and Auckland musicians, visit the Pavilion Gallery, sample Waiheke wines or local artisan produce or simply enjoy a glass of wine or beer and watch the sun set over Matiatia Bay.

Open daily from 9am at the height of summer, this iconic Auckland event runs from 25 January to 17 February 2013 over three weeks and four weekends (including the Waitangi Day and Auckland Anniversary Day long weekends) and shouldn't be missed!

Located just 35 mintues by scenic ferry trip from downtown Auckland, Waiheke Island, is renowned for its natural beauty and casual coastal lifestyle.

It offers a diverse range of enticements combining natural attractions - beautiful scenery, beaches and walking tracks; a relaxed and peaceful escape from the city; a vibrant and diverse community and a cosmopolitan sophistication through its art, award-winning restaurants and artisan produce and internationally recognised wine industry.

Come over for the day, better still, stay longer and explore our unique Island for yourself.
