What is Brazilian jiu jitsu?
BJJ is a martial art and combat sport that emphasises ground grappling and shows how a smaller, weaker person can overcome a bigger, stronger opponent using leverage and proper technique.

BJJ includes many judo and wrestling techniques to get the opponent to the ground and from there teaches practitioners to fight from their backs to gain advantageous positions and apply submission holds. Considering nearly all attacks on women end up on the ground, BJJ is empowering and great means of self-defence.

Maren has over 11 years' of judo and BJJ experience and is offering women's self defence courses. See what people thought about the last introductory seminar: http://www.adventurewellington.co.nz/events/48046802/

Course outline:
Each week we will be revising and building on the principles and techniques of previous sessions. Beginners can comfortably attend individual classes or sign up for the entire course. The 10 week course will cover:

Standing technique:
a: Resist being pushed or pulled
b: Escape a choke from both the front and back
c: Blocking and countering a strike
d: Escape a full body hold from behind and from the front
e: Falling and attacking a standing assailant from the ground

Ground technique:
a: Escapes (and counter attack) on an assailant who is between your legs
b: Escapes (and counterattack) on an assailant who is sitting on your chest
c: Escape from when an assailant has your back
d: Controlling a person from the ground - manipulating a larger opponent

• There will be a "graduation" class on the 11th week and a free advanced
seminar on the 12th week to round it all off.
• Bring along a friend for a free introductory class on the casual rate
• Group bookings for individual classes / seminars are available at reduced fee

Difficulty
There will be close physical contact with other women while practising the techniques so be prepared for this, however feel free to stop and watch whenever you do not feel comfortable participating further.

What to wear:
Be comfortable! Shirts, shorts and sweat pants are all fine. Also bring a drink bottle to keep hydrated.

"This seems to be a fantastic opportunity to focus on martial art techniques that will help ladies defend themselves, should we ever need to. Hopefully never, but better to have some skills before they are needed, rather than after"
