There is always an interesting and diverse range of entertainment and attractions at the Whangarei A&P Summer Show, and this year is no exception with:
- Numerous Stage Shows including singers, dancers and entertainers;
- Eight live demonstrations, from shearing to bee-keeping;
- Axe man action with wood-chopping .
The annual Summer Show attracts both young and old and is recognised as one of Northland’s most iconic family events that not only appeals to the rural dwellers, but to the whole Northland community. It is where the country comes to town.
Wine & food marquee:
This special feature marquee focuses on the wine and food producers of Northland. Northland wine producers offer samples of their wine and sell their products, complimented by an array of Northland’s food producers.
Equestrian events:
There are many equestrian events throughout the show from dressage, showjumping, showhunter, Pinto horses, Welsh, Arab, standard-bred horses, hacks & hunters, ponies and many more.
Tinkers and traders:
The tinkers and traders court adds another dimension to the show. This group of transient ‘house bus’ people travel around the country making and selling their wares. Come and see what they have on offer, and maybe get that Christmas Shopping underway!
Trade exhibitors:
The show just keeps on growing! Another 15 trade sites have been made available this year, with over 187 in total. Well-supported by business from both the local and surround areas, this adds a very dynamic aspect to the show, with many trade exhibitors offering super show specials. There is something of interest for everyone!
Vintage machinery on display:
Some of the most impressive machines of yesteryear will be on display and working during the show. Enthusiastically restored by club members, these old work horses of yesteryear make an interesting and often noisy display.
Milking shed:
Milk comes in plastic containers doesn’t it? Come and see for yourself as real cows are machine milked in the milking shed. You can also see cattle being prepared for the show arena - do they really use hairdryers on cows?
Four-wheel-drive course:
A regular feature at the Whangarei Summer Show is the specially-prepared 4-wheel-drive course, where drivers with their vehicles get down and dirty in one of New Zealand’s most popular sports. Members of the public can experience first hand the enjoyment and thrill seeking feeling of this popular event. Take a ride... you will be guaranteed a memorable experience.
Children’s Big Dig:
This is one of the most popular children’s activities at the show and is free to enter. Children under 9 years of age ‘dig’ for plastic cattle tags located in the big pile of sawdust. Each tag found is redeemed for a special prize.
New Zealand Contractor Excavator Competition:
Another strong line-up from the contracting industry will again pit their skills against each other to find Northland’s representative for the National finals. You will be amazed at what these guys can do with these big grunty machines - they even pour a cup of tea using one of these huge machines!
Sheep shearing demonstrations:
Northland’s representative shearing team will provide sheep shearing demonstrations throughout the day.
Rare breeds animal display:
The rare breeds animal marquee, incorporating the farmyard nursery is back with a vengeance! Extremely popular, this year we will see the return of live demonstrations of spinning, weaving and shearing, along with lots of cute and cuddly animals. There will be poultry & pigeons, goats, miniature ponies, Kune Kune and large black Berkshire pigs. And don’t forget the Dexter cow & calf, llama, alpaca, & donkey eager to see you! Children can enter the petting arena with the animals for the ‘up close and personal’ contact. This marquee is without doubt one of the most popular attractions at the Show.
Children’s calf club, pet lamb and goat competitions:
A key attraction at the show, there will be plenty of children bringing along their pet calves, lambs and goats again this year.
