Whangarei Orienteering - Sprintcity

Our next event is something different from the thickets of the forest.An event type which we have not run up here before. But seeing that there will be a Sprint as part of the Auckland Orienteering Championships that will be held up here on October, (be sure to mark your calendar for this 13-14 Oct, more information will be available about this soon) we thought it would be fun to give you an idea of what it is about.

A sprint, traditionally, is a fast running course (but no fear, as usual we will have walking and family sections!), designed so the winner finshes in about 15min.

The navigation is generally easier than the longer courses as the controls are closer together. In town it will be buildings, paths roads, carparks, gardens - so you are looking at different buiding shapes, getting the right side of the building, corners, stairs, and doorways. The map is magnified to a 1:5000 map. The decision making needs to be accurate and fast if you're to win!

This would be a great event for novices and walkers. But also an excellent challenge for those of you still have keen legs and lungs and want to test youselves at speed!
