In "Wednesday To Come" Renee takes four women of four generations of a single family and looks at how they cope. Working class women, says Renee, have been invisible for too long - not because they are inarticulate but because they are unrecorded. This play, which audiences found so moving in its first productions at Downstage Theatre in 1984, is also a passionate celebration of the contribution women have and are making to the politics of this country.
"Wednesday to Come" is set between Palmerston North and Wellington in 1934, at the time of the workers’ march from Gisborne to Wellington. It exposes the atrocious conditions in the so-called relief camps and the effect on the women who are left to run households by themselves.
