“Toru, wha!” someone yells, as though counting off a kapa haka group. But instead of the expected chorus of te reo, in comes a brace of horns and a rocksteady rhythm, tracing the familiar melody of the World War II standard Nga Iwi E in a raw and spirited approximation of a Jamaican ska band. And that is essentially the formula for Sing Along With the Yoots (Economy), the debut of sprawling Wellington-based ensemble the Yoots, who include members of the Black Seeds, Twinset and the Phoenix Foundation, pulled together by Fat Freddy’s Drop’s ebullient trombonist Joe Lindsay. A dozen more popular Maori singalong tunes receive similar treatment, with the odd one arranged as African highlife (Hoki Mai) or swing (A,E,I,O,U). But if the whole thing conjures images of a Maori showband swept ashore on a Caribbean island, or a Ratana group reorganised by reggae producer Clement Dodd, there’s more than mere novelty to this inspired and often virtuosic set. - Nick Bollinger, The Listener
