In tonight's film, a sequence of violent acts forces everyone involved to consider the nature and meaning of utu (retribution). Inspired by spaghetti westerns, this revisionist take on the New Zealand Wars has, according to esteemed critic Pauline Kael, ‘a deracinated kind of hip lyricism’. Whatever that means.
