Unitec's Department of Performing & Screen Arts presents 2012 Shakespeare season, 1-9 June.
From a shadowed surface of Shakespeare's prism comes the murderous and bloody Titus. From a bright and tragic plane of the same prism comes the sad romance of Romeo and Juliet.
Unitec's 3rd year acting students have been divided into a company of men and a company of women. Each company has a director and the task of performing each play in 80 minutes. To the men goes the city of Rome and its murderous cats, and to the women, Verona and its ill-fated lovers. Shakespeare puts the extremes of human behaviour onto the stage for us to examine and reflect upon. With cross gender casting and an edited text the quest is for essence and transcendence.
What more could we ask of our actors?

From beneath the cracks of a fractured society come those lost in its wake. Clinging desperately to some form of order - but not enough to spite their own base desires - the inhabitants of a shattered world revel in greed, lust and power; where honour overcomes sense; savage abandon is rewarded and sacrifice pales in the pursuit of revenge.
Shakespeare's bloodiest and most gruesome text has refused to be categorised for centuries - tragic, farcical, cut-throat and excessive. Enter a Rome unlike any other in this audacious adaptation of the iconic revenge tragedy. Shakespeare's most acidic work - on acid.
