One of the first export industries in the area was the shipping of timber. A model kauri dam opposite the main entrance to the Kauaeranga Visitors centre will be tripped to show the method used to flush logs down into the First of Thames. Kauri dams made it possible for timber to be extracted for the otherwise inaccessible parts of the Kauaeranga Valley. They were constructed on the main creeks and were used to build up a large body of water that would drive the felled kauri downstream where they could be collected for shipping to England, Australia and America.

This event is an official event of Thames Heritage Week.
