It is a showcase of quality investigative journalism and the best of New Zealand photo-journalism, with a stable of writers who regularly scoop the pool at media awards. North & South has a circulation of 25,324 and readership of 269,000.
Yvonne Van Dongen is a freelance writer. She was formerly travel editor at the New Zealand Herald and travel editor and commissioning editor of onHoliday magazine. Yvonne has won numerous travel writing awards including the 1995 Travel Writer of the Year and the 1998 Fletcher Challenge Paper Commonwealth Media Award in which she won a fellowship to Cambridge University in the UK. In 1999 she did an internship with Conde Nast Traveler in New York. She has also taught travel writing at the University of Auckland's continuing education department.
Why the 21st century travel writer needs to become an internet entrepreneur. Jocelyn Watkin is a full-time writer and blogger and blogs under the name of Eventful Woman. She used Eventful Woman's brand, character and client base to negotiate a subsidised travel writer-in-residence in Zell an der Mosel (Germany) for four weeks in October 2011. Jocelyn became a professional writer when she and her photographer husband drove around the world in a classic Land Rover in 1998/99, working as a photojournalism team for a British Land Rover magazine. Her considerable sales and marketing experience enabled her to negotiate a large sponsorship package for this expedition.
Jocelyn believes that the Internet and blogging offers more opportunities and far less frustration than traditional outlets for travel writers. As such writers of the future will need to be Internet entrepreneurs to survive.
