Founder of the Sargam School of Music, Basant Madhur is a well-known and hugely popular tabla player in Auckland. Before coming to Auckland he was well recognised in India, a feat not easy given the size and talent of musicians in that vast country. Basant is also fortunate to be born in a very musically oriented family. Professor Shuk Dev Madhur is a retired professor of music. He spends his time between India and New Zealand. When here, he teaches at the Sargam. He is the recipient of a national award from the President of India for his work in music. He has a wealth of knowledge about Indian classical music. Auckland based Akhilesh Madhur is the grandson of Prof Madhur, and nephew of Basant Madhur, safeguarding the Madhur family lineage of Indian classical music. For a 12-year-old boy, he is amazingly talented and gifted on the tabla.
