Directed by Stephen Robertson with Musical Direction by Michael Buick, The Sound of Music is the final collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II and is based on the story of the Trapp Family Singers. A widowed Austrian ex-naval officer, Captain von Trapp (Ben Winders) has made his home overly strict with harshly enforced discipline. Maria Rainer (Alice Fraser), a postulant, is failing in her attempts to become a nun. The Reverend Mother (Melissa Crennan) decides that Maria should leave the Abbey and take on the role of Governess at the Von Trapp household in Salzburg caring for the Captain's seven mischievous children. Through music and play Maria gives the children a taste of a more joyous life and they come to love her dearly. The Captain grows closer to his children and comes to appreciate the effect Maria has on his household. However it is 1938 and Germany is marching on Austria and the Captain is a strong patriot.

Captain Von Trapp is also in a romantic relationship with the wealthy and sophisticated Baroness Elsa Schraeder (Michelle Willyams). However he is becoming more and more captivated by Maria and she by him. This scares Maria and she runs back to the convent where the Reverend Mother convinces her that she must face her feelings. Maria returns to the Captain's home but is unfortunately too late as the Captain and the Baroness have become engaged and the Captain has been summoned by the Third Reich to serve in the Navy.

Can true love prevail?
