Wellington’s largest Tai Chi School open in Eastern Suburbs.
The Petone based Wellington School of Tai Chi Chuan is opening a new branch in the Eastern suburbs. Classes will be held at the Scots College Hodge Sports Centre in Strathmore on Monday evenings.
The school, which is headed by Sifu (Master) Hennie Barnard was founded in 2001 and is based in Jackson Street. With more than one hundred students and 9 instructors, the school is the largest of its kind in the Wellington region. Students of the school recently celebrated the 10th anniversary with a three week tour of China.
Tai Chi has been practised in China for centuries as a martial art, as exercise, and as a means of improving the flow of internal energy (chi) within the body. It improves balance, memory and strength. Increasing demand from people looking for an alternative to high impact sports, a new way to meet people and an effective form of stress release, have led to branches of the school being opened in Whitby and Roseneath.
Hennie has been involved with various martial arts for over 50 years, with the last 23 years dedicated to Tai Chi Chuan. He has been an instructor for over 20 years and also teaches at various colleges and schools in the Wellington region. He is also a New Zealand national judge at Kung Fu and Tai Chi competitions.
Tai Chi is suitable for people of any age or ability and current students of the Wellington School of Tai Chi Chuan include everyone from martial arts experts, to dancers to people recovering from hip or knee replacements.
The Eastern Suburbs branch opens on Monday 13 February at 6pm. Classes will run for one hour. All welcome.
