Swing dancing gained popularity in the 1930s and '40s amongst the younger generation who were looking for an alternative to the regular ballroom dances of the day, such as the fox trot and the waltz. The dance was so infectious that the famous Savoy Ballroom in Harlem was one of the first places that had blacks an whites mixing together and dancing on the same floor and breaking down the race barrier.
Eventually the Jitterbug craze was replaced by other dances like rock and roll as the music evolved and changed.
Then in the 1980s with the rediscovery of old movies such as 'Helzapoppin' and 'Day at the Races' the Lindy Hop was back and being danced in small pockets in America and Sweden and has since been steadily growing in popularity all over the world, along with other Swing dances of the era.
