Course content:
Design, decoration, clay, glaze, colour, texture, firing, tiles, press-moulds and paperclay.
Exploration and experimental activities will include all of the above and possibly other areas of individual interest. Involvement will be adapted to your individual needs and skills, with regard to surface treatment there will be a strong emphasis on visual and aesthetic considerations. There will be every opportunity to learn the firing methods relating to electric kilns. Promises easy participation at all levels of ability from beginner to advanced.
Tutor profile:
Brian Gartisde was originally involved in art and art education before being a full time potter for 30 years.
His pottery is collected, photographed, published in many books. His colourful and decorative functional bowls and plates are used in many New Zealand homes. He has a keen interest in keeping methods and processes as simple as possible and this enables easy development of visual surfaces Brian Gartside has been established on the NZ art scene for 40 years, firstly as a Teachers College Lecturer In Art and Ceramics and later as a successful and respected potter and clay artist. He has work in most of the Art museum collections in New Zealand. He lives in Pukekohe and his ceramic work is noted for his strong colourful images that reflect NZ with geographical symbols and images For the past twenty years he has published magazine articles, contributed to several international conferences and taught workshops in ceramics on a regular basis in Canada, USA, Britain and Australia and has been a guest artist in Hungary, Finland, USA and Canada.

The annual “Summer Do” is held in the beautiful and inspirational environment at the Quarry Arts Centre located minutes from Whangarei. The Quarry is the perfect place to immerse yourself in a 7 ½ day or 3 day art courses designed to be stimulating, inclusive, intensive and fun. We invite you to join us, to gain and share experiences and knowledge in the hands of an experienced renowned tutor in this supportive, social and encouraging environment. The “Do” also includes informal talks by participating tutors and fun evening events.
2012 marks the 25th year of the Summer Do making it the longest running art school in New Zealand.
